Polishing
Polishing and finishing the stone comes under the expertise of Danny Spragg, Debra’s husband and partner in the business of soapstone. A very talented artist himself, who helps in preparing the stone sometimes weighing up to 800 lbs – cutting and shaping the rough forms.
Debra takes over from there, completing the final detail work of the carving. And then when mallets and chisels are put away, Dan takes over again – spending hours polishing and finishing the stone with a technique all his own to bring out the true colors of the soapstone to life like no other.
Using mostly Brazilian soapstone with it’s variations of color and hardness makes polishing the stone a surprise every time. The polishing continues with finer and finer grits of wet sanding papers and the depth of the stone is revealed to its full luster.
After polishing, the finishing of soapstone can be done in many different ways and this one is all his.
How does he do it. ….. shhhhhh, it’s a secret
